Monkey Selfie Lawsuit Ends in Settlement
Macaque Monkey

A copyright lawsuit filed on behalf of an Indonesian monkey by animal advocacy group PETA has ended before a settlement could be reached. The group that claims the animal owns the rights to a famous series of "monkey selfie" photographs taken with photographer David Slater’s camera.

Naruto, the Indonesian monkey who took the photos in question, is now 7 years old. He lives with others macaques in a rainforest reserve on the island of Sulawesi. He took the selfies in 2011 with a camera that Slater, a British wildlife photographer, brought to the reserve.

After Slater published the photographs in 2014, PETA sued on behalf of the macaque monkey. They attempted to gain financial control of the photographs so the money could be used to benefit Naruto.

After a lower court ruled in Slater’s favor, and the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was considering PETA's appeal. Before the appeal could be considered, PETA asked that the charges be dropped. Mr. Slater has agreed to donate 25 percent of any future revenue to charities dedicated to protecting crested macaques.

A joint statement posted to PETA's website Monday read: "PETA and David Slater agree that this case raises important, cutting-edge issues about expanding legal rights for nonhuman animals, a goal that they both support, and they will continue their respective work to achieve this goal."
