Is An Apple iCar On The Horizon?
Apple Car Patent

The tech world is buzzing with the possibility that Apple, Inc., an innovator in consumer electronics, computer software, online services, and personal computers, may be developing an iCar to rival Tesla’s.

Though Apple, Inc. is very closed-mouthed about developments, several events are leading observers to the conclusion that Apple is moving into the electric car business:
- Mickey Drexler, a former member of Apple’s board of directors, stated that Steve Jobs wanted to rethink the automotive industry before his death;
- The company has shifted hundreds of workers to a special project called “Titan”;
- The company has hired specialists in the automotive industry, such as:
- Doug Betts, who previously worked at Toyota, Nissan and Chrysler;
- Paul Furgale, who specialized in researching and developing robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich;
- Johann Jungwirth, who ran the Mercedes-Benz R&D facility that produced the Mercedes F 015 self-driving car;
-50 employees with engineering histories at Tesla;
-Samsung employees, especially battery specialists;
- Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Apple is offering Tesla engineers a $250,000 signing bonus and 60% pay increase;
- The company is negotiating with BMW, seems interested in the carbon-fiber-reinforced BMW i3 electric vehicle, supposedly the most energy-efficient car in the US;
- The company’s engineers met authorities from GoMentum Station, a War World II-era naval base near San Francisco, with:
- 20 miles of daily transportation scenarios;
- 24-hour armed surveillance;
-A123 Systems, an electric car battery manufacturer, filed suit against Apple for an “aggressive campaign” to poach engineers from the Plaintiff;
-The Company has patented several auto-related innovations, including:
- Technology allowing the user to unlock a car and start an engine from an iDevice;
- A design with in-car camera technology;
-Technology allowing multiple users to program preferences, such as seat position, temperature, and radio stations, even in someone else’s vehicle.

Some observers are betting on an electric car to rival a Tesla electric car that will travel 200+ miles on one charge and is slated for sale by 2017. The anticipated iCar is expected to cost approximately $87,500, comparable to Tesla’s 2015 Model S.

Then again, Apple reportedly works on so many projects that this might involve a very different innovation or even an iCar that will never be fully developed.
