Microsoft Forcing Windows 10 Download
Microsoft Windows

You may have noticed in the past 6 months or so that Microsoft Corporation is pushing its “Windows 10” operating system, particularly from those annoying pop-up upgrade prompts: “Upgrade now” and/or “Upgrade tonight.”

If you managed to outlast those nagging prompts, Microsoft is now targeting you. Intent on its 1 billion registration target, Microsoft now designates Windows 10 as a “recommended” update. The new “recommended” status means that installation of Windows 10 will begin automatically on computers running Windows 7 or 8 and still having the default Windows Update settings.

The forced download and Microsoft’s associated actions present several problems. First, current Windows 7 or 8 users who have metered data allowances with their internet providers will be charged extra if the six 4-6GB download forces them to exceed their data allowances, often without their knowledge until billed for the excess.

Secondly, in order to make Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 less attractive to current users, Microsoft has changed its policy regarding support for those programs. Microsoft previously promised to support those systems: Windows 7 until January 14, 2020 and Windows 8 until January 10, 2023. However, Microsoft will not support those systems until those dates if your computer is not upgraded to use current or future generation silicon from AMD, Intel or Qualcomm. Basically, you have to keep your computer old in order to keep using supported Windows 7 or 8.

Third, one objection to Windows 10 is its extensive user tracking and data mining. In other words, Windows 10 constantly tracks and collects data about how your computer is working and how you are using the computer, and then sends that data back to Microsoft. What’s more, despite Microsoft’s supposed options to turn off tracking, core data collection cannot be disabled. Many deem this tracking and data mining undue invasions of their privacy. To eliminate that objection to replacing Windows 7 & 8 with Windows 10, Microsoft retroactively installed the same tracking and data mining on Windows 7 & 8.

Fourth, there are reported problems with Windows 10. Though Microsoft insists that Windows 10 is compatible with current programs, applications and hardware, some Windows 10 users insist that it is not compatible with, for example, Camtasia Studio. In addition, there have been a number of bugs, such as lock-ups of Start Menus, vanishing taskbar icons, audio problems and errors in copy/paste functions.

Fifth, leaving aside all the above mentioned issues, there is also a question of freedom of choice: the freedom to keep Windows 7 or 8 rather than be forced to accept Windows 10. This is the first time in 30 years that Microsoft is forcing users to accept a new operating system. That, in itself, is a disturbing decision and will make Microsoft’s inevitably larger Windows 10 registration numbers hollow and misleading.
