Scientists Create Frozen Light

Scientists at Princeton University recently created a new form of light: solid, crystalized light from “photons,” the subatomic particles comprising light. In a September 8, 2014 article whimsically entitled “Observation of a Dissipation-Induced Classical to Quantum Transition,” researchers described the process that made light behave in a way nobody had seen before. If you find that title amusing, read the side-splitting article itself here:

The new light feat was achieved by creating an artificial mega-atom of 100 billion atoms of superconducting material, and then placing that artificial atom near a superconducting wire encompassing photons. The nearness of the two items caused “quantum entanglement” in which the photons adopted some characteristics of the artificial atom, became locked together and took on some characteristics of liquid and solid matter, depending on the “mode of operation.” This behavior runs directly contrary to traditional physics, which taught that photons do not interact with each other.

An interesting trick but what’s the big deal? Some scientists surmise that this process can be used to develop: new types of semiconductors; new types of sensors; extraordinarily fast computers; new energy solutions; media and systems for studying subatomic systems and nonexistent but imagined materials. In other words, this “solid light” process may have just opened a new chapter in the field of Science, particularly Quantum Mechanics.
