In 1998 the Weinsteins sold their rights to the J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy to Warner Bros. The Weinsteins are stating that Warner Bros split the Hobbit into 3 films. All 3 films of the Hobbit were filmed by the same director at the same time.
Weinsteins is claiming because of the filming of all three Hobbit films were filmed at once that it is basically one film split into three.
If they are able to prove their case the Weinsteins will be entitled to part of the profits of all three Hobbit films. They are suing for $75 million in damages.
